<p>The first CBC report sheet confuses almost everybody. There is no position in class, no percentage, and no obvious way to tell whether your child is doing well. Here is how to read it.</p>

<h2>The four levels</h2> <table> <tr><th>Level</th><th>Means</th><th>What to do</th></tr> <tr><td><strong>EE</strong> — Exceeding Expectation</td><td>Beyond what is asked at this stage</td><td>Give them harder problems and let them help others</td></tr> <tr><td><strong>ME</strong> — Meeting Expectation</td><td>Exactly where they should be</td><td>This is the target. Keep going.</td></tr> <tr><td><strong>AE</strong> — Approaching Expectation</td><td>Nearly there, needs more practice</td><td>Short, regular practice on that specific skill</td></tr> <tr><td><strong>BE</strong> — Below Expectation</td><td>Needs direct support</td><td>Talk to the teacher this week, not at the end of term</td></tr> </table>

<h2>ME is a good result</h2> <p>Parents used to percentages often read ME as mediocre. It is not. ME means your child can do what the curriculum expects of them at this stage. A report full of ME is a child who is fine.</p>

<h2>Read it skill by skill</h2> <p>Because assessment is by strand and sub-strand, a report shows where a child is strong and where they are not — the same child might be EE in Measurement and AE in Fractions. That detail is the point of the report. An overall level tells you much less than the line-by-line breakdown.</p>

<h2>Formative and summative</h2> <p>Formative entries come from classwork, observation and projects across the term. Summative comes from end-of-term assessment. If the two disagree sharply — strong all term, weak at the end — that is usually worth a conversation about exam nerves rather than ability.</p>

<h2>The question to ask at a parents' meeting</h2> <p>Not "what position is she?" — the report will not answer that. Ask: <em>"Which sub-strands is she below expectation on, and what should we do at home?"</em> That is a question a teacher can act on.</p>
